Fraud Prevention & Safety Guide
How to identify legitimate Lifeline providers and protect yourself from government phone scams.
How to Spot a Scammer
Scammers often target Lifeline applicants by pretending to be government officials. Use this guide to verify if an offer is legitimate.
Warning Sign #1: Asking for Payment
Legitimate: The Lifeline benefit is FREE. You may pay a small co-pay for a premium device upgrade, but the application itself is always free.
Scam: Anyone asking for a “Processing Fee,” “Shipping Fee” via CashApp/Venmo, or Gift Cards is a scammer.
Warning Sign #2: “We Are The Government”
Legitimate: Providers like FreeiPhoneGovt.com are private companies authorized to distribute benefits. We are NOT the government.
Scam: Claims like “We are the FCC” or using the official FCC seal illegally to pressure you.
Official vs. Fake: Quick Check
| ✅ Official Provider (Us) | ❌ Fake Scammer |
|---|---|
| Asks for SSN (Last 4) for National Verifier | Asks for Full SSN via Email/Text |
| Uses Secure Website (https://) | Uses Facebook Messenger / WhatsApp |
| Sends Official Tracking Number | Demands “Activation Fee” before shipping |
